"Flow" is considered a state of well-being in which you are so in tune with the moment that time and place falls away. Creatively speaking, you feel that a greater force takes over, moving through you as if you are a conduit of a larger universal knowledge.
In your daily life, Flow can also be experienced when the right thing happens just when you need it. These experiences are often called synchronicity or serendipity: I like to call that the Flow.
Our Culture Succeeds at Low Flow
The higher your stress level, the less likely you are to be in Flow. Unfortunately, we are a stressed-out society: 75% of doctor visits are associated with stress induced elements; 48% of Americans report last sleep due to stress; 77% of Americans report symptoms of extreme stress including heart palpitations and shaking; and 73% report psychological symptoms including irritability and strong emotions.
Stress-related issues like these are a far cry from the ease and joy associated with Flow. Unfortunately, many people lean on mal-adaptive methods to cope. Coping mechanisms like substance use, compulsive eating, and social media further deplete Flow as they harm the body or disperse your personal energy.
Culturally, we are in need of effective resources to reduce stress and increase Flow. These resources should quiet the mind while also having a positive effect on your mind-body biology. One powerful resource is yoga!
How Yoga Increases Flow
Physically, yoga improves many of the symptoms associated with Low Flow:
- Improved sleep.
- Lower blood pressure and improved weight management.
- Improved immune functions.
Emotionally, yoga can help you:
- Manage symptoms of anxiety and depression.
- Improve self-worth and self-confidence.
- Improve concentration and focus.
In fact, yoga practitioners are 20% more likely to have a positive self image as compared to the general population.
Try Yoga To Jumpstart Your Flow
Yoga can be explored by anyone regardless of age or mobility. Many of the poses can be done seated in a chair.
