Have you ever experienced a redefining moment that left you feeling lost or alone? Perhaps it was a breakup, a health diagnosis, a financial crisis, or another kind of trauma? These life-altering events are the metaphor in the opening scenes of Girl in the Woods as the central character, Timberella, falls from her nest in a great storm.
Weathering the Storm
In this story, Timberella picks herself up. She is in unfamiliar territory, without resources. She’s not sure if she can ever find her way to her treetop “home” again. Vulnerable and unsure of herself, she makes her way through the forest.
First, she happens upon a small songbird. It reminds her that while she may or may not make it back to life as she knew it, she has a gift: we all have Gifts. It imparts the wisdom that “home” is found when one is connected to those Gifts, and shares them with the world. The songbird leaves her with this key of wisdom, and moves on.
ART & JOURNAL Prompts
Here are questions for consideration:
· Do you seek support from others when in crisis?
· Do you shrink back from challenges, or take them on?
· What are your strengths, talents, and passions (Gifts)? Are you expressing them, or sharing them with the world?
· If you are not connected to your Gifts, why not? What is blocking you?
· Who has offered support and guidance to you in your times of need?
· What type of guidance and support do you need right now?
· Are you, or have you been, someone else’s songbird?
ART PROMPTS (choose 1): Create a songbird (in any 2- or 3-d media) -OR- Create a GIFT (wrap a package, draw a “present”. Journal with the artwork, asking it directly:
What wisdom does it have to share?
What 1-3 specific actions can you take to connect with, and express your gifts more fully in this world?
Then, ask your image: Does it have anything else to share?
Pro art therapy tip: Trying answering these questions with your non-dominant hand.
You Have A Gift
No matter what Storm you’ve experienced or are experiencing right now, be reminded: sometimes things need to fall apart in order to fall together. This is not shared to diminish your experience: it is intended as an offering of hope. Remember: you matter. You are worthy. You have GIFTS to share with this world!
